Project: Tape

Tape Removal and Bespoke Housing

Project Overview

A casebound dictionary from the 1930s Both boards, spine piece, and first and last gatherings were held on by two different types of Pressure Sensitive Tape (PST) A rubber-based duct tape A cellophane-based clear tape

Treatment

I used heat and manual methods to remove the carriers of the tape, then tested different methods of adhesive removal and solvent delivery Compared solvent delivery methods: Gel vs Direct Applications Replaced the tapes and inserted them into partial splits in the boards to provide extra strength to the binding I humidified, resized and repaired a piece of manuscript ephemera found within the textblock

Housing

I housed the ephemera within a modified fasicule enclosure I created a bookshoe to fit both the book and ephemera so that they can both remain upright and together to prevent dissociation while on a shelf I included a foot and plasterzote support in this too
